I find that travelling with Wightlink is very efficient way of getting to the island. Very easy to book a ferry with their online ticket system. The ferries themselves offer a great range of amenities with clean toilets, well stocked shops and coffee bars. It is very easy to get to the terminal at Gunwharf and returning its just as easy to find my way home.
