“Buuks is a scam, Their domain was reported to be inactive, and I am unable to log in anymore. Sadly, AMDARK LIMITED * C0M enabled me to receive my hard-earned money back, and I am at a loss for words. Contact them if you want your money returned.”
“We made every attempt; calls, emails, reports but nothing was successful. I was upset, believing I would never see my money again, but when I contacted M A D A C O V I.X Y Z, they found out and made sure I got every penny back after Buuks had assumed they had gotten away with taking my money. I would caution everyone not to trust these folks since they are genuine con artists who have duped me.”
“Buuks should be boycotted on moral grounds.
I have just realised that £405 has been taken from my account since I bought a book for a fiver from them - or at least that's all I thought I was doing. It was not clear that I was agreeing to a membership, therefore I could not consent to this money being taken; as such Buuks obtains money by deception and manipulation.
As The Guardian reports; "While the £15-a-month membership fee is made very clear to computer users, it is not obvious if you are on a mobile phone"; https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/jun/15/cheap-book-deal-club-buuks
Painfully, I have just become aware that I have been a member for 27 months. Not once in this time period have I received an email with offers or information about their books. This is clearly strategic so that anyone who has become victim to their deception does not become aware that they have signed up to such a membership. Their strategy is to exploit those vulnerable to their manipulation and get away with it for as long as they can; this is how they make their money.
Yes, it is my responsibility to check my account, but it is their responsibility not to deceive and coerce people. They get away with it on technicalities, but there is a bigger picture here that matters. It is not made clear - their business model is manipulative and exploitative and in my view, clearly immoral.
When I contacted them, their responses were gaslighting.
Do not order from Buuks. There are many alternatives that have some basic humanity in them. ”
“Appalling company. Took £285 from my account. These were membership charges for discount books. No email of offers were sent to me in this period but they did manage to keep withdrawing money from my account. Terrible company who have no interest in discussing this matter now.”
“Appalling company, they scammed me out of £285.00
I bought one book and they continued to debit my card for 18 months thereafter, I must admit that I did not it notice it on my cc statement but reading other people reviews this is their modus operandi.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! They are con artists.”
“Minus 100 stars yes they reall are that bad so beware.
Public be aware BUUKS are Parasitic Scammers and that is to end all scammers they are the worst of the worst, absolute low-life.
There should be a Government Health Warning before anyone is allowed to go on their site saying that: "This company can and will take your hard earnt money for absolutely nothing apart from making themselves richer off of it".
They take your card details to pay for one book and then without telling you continue to dip into your 'wallet or purse' until you, or your bank in my case, realise you've been scammed to the tune of £190 and that you got nothing in return.
Avoid them at all cost. Keep your money. Don't make these Major Scammers richer than they are already.
I'm widowed a pensioner and hate this company for what they've done to me. But I know there are dozens more, if not hundreds more, unwitting people who've been turned over by this supposed book company. The book part is just a front for taking money that doesn't belong to them
A program from Martin Lewis on this company wouldn't go amiss and then they should be made to pay back everything they've taken from the public that they did not have permission to take.”
“I accidentally bought 3 books at the members price, instead of cost price, not realising that this entailed a £15.00 per month members fee. It isn't glaringly obvious on the purchase page and automatically defaults to the members purchase. So £20 worth of books has cost me £135. Be careful and make sure you click the radial button for cost price, not the automatic members price, otherwise £15 will be taken every month.
I only just noticed 9 months in. The company should change this to default to the cost price, so people don't get confused, but I guess they already know this happens from the negative reviews and haven't done anything to rectify this, as it is regular income from them.
Yes, now I have looked on the receipt, it shows as membership cost, but I didn't spot this at the time and don't sign up as a member for anything like this. A sly way to fleece people.
As other reviews have stated, no email to alert you to your membership sign up or a reminder after the 1 month initial sign up cooling off period to give those accidental members a chance to cancel. But I guess that is not done for a reason and not for the benefit of the customer.
Buuks, if you genuinely care about your customers then you will improve your communication with "members".”
“AVOID AT ALL COST BUYING A BOOK FROM THEM> Scammers took £15 a month from me for over a year. I had bought a book on my phone so had missed right at the bottom the information that I had joined a membership club. You get nothing for this and no further emails just have £15 a month taken from you. I cannot believe I fell for this”
“Underhanded, deceitful and dishonest - reported to Trading Standards. Before I realised what was going on, they'd taken £75 from my account over a number of months and refuse point-blank to refund any of it, and all because I bought one £5 book at the pre-selected 'members price'. I'm a regular online book-buyer, from all sorts of sites, and nothing remotely like this has never happened before. Buyers have a reasonable expectation that an online company isn't willfully mis-directing them into buying something they don't want - there wasn't even a clear and obvious mention of the membership I'd 'signed up' for in the confirmation email, anywhere near the purchased book itself!”
