“We were simply looking for somewhere to break a long journey for the night and found Swinfen Hall more or less by accident. We were very pleasantly surprised - if anything it seems to undersell itself!
The hotel is a lovingly restored early 18th century house with a fascinating history. It has only about 20 bedroms and stunning grounds, including a deerpark and walled vegetable garden. Our bedroom, no. 212, was large and spotlessly clean with an excellent bathroom and amazing double aspect views over the grounds. The public rooms are really interesting and beautifully restored. The staff were all delightful and helpful.
Dinner is a more or less fixed tasting menu of 3, 5 or 8 courses which only changes seasonally, with little choice. We are foodies and thought the five course menu was really excellent, very imaginative and delicous, mostly featuring very local produce (some from the vegetable garden). The wine list was quite broad and reasonably priced. The only disappointment was the bread, which did not seem to be up to the same standard. Breakfast was what one would expect - leisurely and very good. We understand that there is another bistro style restaurant, which we did not try.
The lack of variety in terms of dinner could be an obstacle to staying for more than a day or two. And there is no lift, so it would not be suitable for people who are disabled or have difficulty walking.
Now a rant. The public rooms were filled with idiotic, vacuous wallpaper musak - and the musak was different from room to room. Why on earth don't people who take so much trouble to restore such a lovely house not understand that it has its own atmosphere and doesn't need such inanity? Rant over.Show less”

“We were treated to afternoon tea at Swinfen Hall as an anniversary gift. We booked 3 months in advance and requested the seat by the fire (wintry day expected!). Unfortunately our fire side seat had been given to another group because they were 3 and we were only 2. We were not happy with this, however the hotel staff kindly laid the table in the entrance hall so we could sit by the fire there. A blast of cold air hit us each time the main door was opened, but that was not too frequently.
The food was excellent, food intolerance were allowed for and the tea was lovely. Staff were helpful and accommodating. Just a shame the original request was not honoured.”

“Stayed for one night on route to Devon. Very pleasant and very nice touches. Good attention to detail. We did not want the tasting menu and the a la carte menu was quite limiting and took a while! Breakfast was very good. Staff in general very good. Room very pleasant but would have liked some slippers and also the bathroom light was faulty and the towel rail was not working!”

“Magnificent mansion house hotel in extensive countryside setting. Warm welcome received and a very friendly team on hand. We arrived late due to a long train then car journey and the staff were waiting for us to check in and show us to our rooms. The room itself was clean and comfortable with good quality bathroom and choice of toiletries en-suite . Unfortunately my door wouldn’t lock from the outside (room 213) and so I had concerns about security when leaving the room for breakfast the next morning . It didn’t detract too much from an otherwise comfortable stay.”

“The Sunday was excellent from the warm welcome to the outstanding meal , service , room and cleanliness of the place but unfortunatly the Monday morning only scraped by as being acceptable breakfast was sadly disappointing in the way it was served and definatly not up to the standard expected also I don't know if there was a sausage shortage or if its your usual policy but people were refused a extra sausage even when they weren't having all of the other items on offer. There seemed to be a shortage of staff around the hotel being on hand to offer assitance in the morning and on checking out .”

“Amazing looking building but fell short on the small details. My room was nicely decorated but felt stuffy. The hot water in the morning didnt work and I had to run the shower for 5-10 minutes before it came through, then it went again halfway through my shower. The staff who checked me in were very attentive, but in the morning there was only one staff member around, so I had to leave without properly checking out (as the staff member on reception had to go and make a cup of coffee for another guest?). For me, not worth the money and I wouldn't stay again.”

Thank you for your review. We take all feedback seriously and appreciated guests comments. We do not want any of our guests to leave Swinfen unhappy and i am every sorry to read , that it appears in this instance, that you did.
Due to the size and age of our building we do have very long pipe runs and it can take 5 or 10 minutes for the hot water to come through, however why it then ran cold again, i do not know and can only apologise for this.
We would appreciate the opportunity to rectify your feelings about staying here again and ensure you leave us feeling much happier next time. Please do ask for me direct should you wish to give us this opportunity.
