This is the second time I've had to replace this part on my Silvia machine. Replacement was easy, it fits machine perfectly. However, No other parts have needed to be replaced at all. The plastic cowling isn't very durable and the chrome peels within a year or two. Metal cowling would be far preferable to a plastic one that tries to look like metal.

I'm working on upgrading my Rancilio Silvia, pressure gauge, PID temperature controller and so on and by mistake I scratched the group cowling. I bought a new one I received today. I am from Romania, I paid a lot for transport and customs duties but I'm happy, the ordered items arrived well. Near the place where I live I have not found to buy.

A couple of years ago, I just removed the thing and left the group head exposed. I've never burned myself. It really serves no purpose other than cosmetic.

I've had no problems swapping this part on the v.2 and newer Silvias. Originally, Rancilio used a stamped steel cowling, but updated to the chrome-plated plastic. The plastic cowling is prettier than the original metal cowling, but is far less durable. The posts where the screws go can break off and the chrome will peel within 5 years.
