I had an extremely disappointing experience with TAP Air Portugal, and I feel it’s important to warn other travelers — especially those booking with non-European cards. On July 7th, 2025, I purchased a ticket through the TAP website. The total amount was clearly displayed and confirmed in British pounds (GBP) — exactly £4,142.90. There was no mention of any alternative currency or additional charges. However, once the payment was processed, I noticed that the amount had actually been withdrawn in U.S. dollars, not GBP — and at a terrible exchange rate, resulting in a loss of more than $240 due to hidden conversion fees. I was completely unaware of this switch, and it happened without any consent or warning — and even the official receipt provided by TAP shows the amount in GBP, not USD. There was no indication anywhere during the booking or payment process that the final charge would be in a different currency. When I contacted TAP’s customer support and provided all booking details and documentation, their response was simply: “It’s not our responsibility. The payment processor or your bank handles the currency.” This is completely unacceptable. It’s TAP’s website that showed and confirmed the total in GBP. It’s TAP’s system that allowed the charge to go through in a different currency without my knowledge. And it’s TAP that ultimately profited from this lack of transparency — either through commission or through negligence. I was given no option to opt out, no warning. Had I known I’d be charged in USD, I would have paid with a different card or booked elsewhere. This kind of deceptive pricing and blame-shifting shows a serious lack of integrity. I’ve since discovered that many other customers have experienced the same issue with TAP. If they’re aware of this flaw — and do nothing to fix it — then it’s not a bug, it’s a business model. If you're booking with TAP and not using a card from the Eurozone, be very careful. You may end up paying far more than expected, with zero recourse. I will never fly with TAP again, and I strongly advise others to avoid them as well — unless you want to gamble with your money and be left without support when something goes wrong.
