Carrot insurance is alright, but there's alot of room for improvement. The black box helps bring the initial price down, but I've been caught up to now buy extra miles with 2 months left on my policy. I was quoted about £50 for 150 extra miles, not too bad but still annoying.
The black box also isn't very realistic- if you need to emergency brake, pull off quickly, or need to speed ever so slightly in order to overtake, you are marked down on the points system. Also if you do short journeys of about 15 mins or under, drive after 11pm or drive longer than an hour at once, you are also marked down. So the rewards scheme doesn't really reward you as much as advertised. I'm all for black box monitoring and I understand why, but when it doesn't account for real world driving it's more of a con than a pro.
As for customer service, the new system does work but you still end up waiting a while for someone to speak/type to. I'd say it's slightly better than waiting on the phone, but nothing revolutionary.
Overall Carrot is an average insurance group for young drivers as cost always comes first really. I'd look around first, but if you can't find a better price, then Carrot would be a fair choice.
