As a Gay teenager in the late 70's, I became deathly ill and was hospitalized with a novel mystery illness that no blood test could identify. Medical specialists were baffled as to why an otherwise very healthy 18 year old was suddenly so very sick. I slowly recovered and went on with my happy life, never questioning my brush with death. It was short lived. In 1983, the first of my friends rapidly wasted away and died at the tender age of 22. Over the next 20 years, the majority of my friends got sick and one by one died. AIDS had taken hold of my community and decimated it. Every message in the media was "It's a Death Sentence." I was certain that I would be dead before my 30th birthday. Somehow I remained healthy past the 10 year life expectancy and in 1995 began anti retroviral treatment. My body aches increased as time went on and my gut health deteriorated. I felt unwell more often than not. Although I was grateful that I had survived, my quality of life had suffered and "dealing with it" was a baseline constant. Now here comes the good part.....
