Awful Customer Service — Book Directly with the Rental Company Instead
I’m writing this review to warn others: do NOT book through GoCarRentals.com. If you’re planning a trip and renting a car, always book directly with the rental company (e.g., Budget, Hertz, etc.) — that way, if anything goes wrong, you can deal with the actual provider directly instead of being stuck in a frustrating and helpless middleman situation.
We had planned a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver, carefully budgeting everything — car rental, hotels, and excursions. We booked through GoCarRentals.com, not realizing they were just a third-party site that uses companies like Budget to supply the actual vehicles.
When our flight to Calgary was cancelled at the last minute, we immediately contacted GoCarRentals.com. Budget told us they couldn’t help because the booking wasn’t made directly through them — everything had to go through GoCarRentals.
Over four stressful hours, we called and spoke to numerous agents. Many were difficult to understand, lacked any empathy, and gave us conflicting information. Not a single person seemed to take ownership or genuinely care. The only consistent message was that we should cancel the booking and rebook at a much higher price — over £1,500 more. All we were asking for was for them to hold the car for 25 extra hours due to a cancelled flight — not an unreasonable request.
Never in my life have I experienced customer service this bad. It was chaotic, cold, and completely unhelpful. It nearly ruined our entire trip.
This experience taught us the hard way: always book directly with who you want the car from. If there are issues, at least you can deal with the company directly instead of getting bounced around by a third party that refuses to help.
We will never use GoCarRentals.com again, and I strongly encourage others to avoid them.
