The Batscanner seems an ideal beginners bat detector and very portable. It has a sensitive mike that can detect bats some distance away, through trees - and it rapidly locks onto their frequency . It's brilliant for use in our community woodland to bring a whole new dimension to evening walks. The only downside is that as it is not tuneable, i is harder to do advanced species ID.
