I've used this service twice to ship different cars from LA to DC. It was pretty straightforward both times with Lottie from Ship a Car, she's great. It was just dealing with the transporter during my second shipping that was kind of iffy, but it turned out fine. Both cars were shipped, arrived at the estimated timeframe and the pickup was smooth both times. Both times my cars shipped uncovered, and the second time there was micro damage to the windshield seemingly from pebbles or something, but I guess that's the risk you take having the vehicle uncovered.
