The COA for Win 7 Pro did not work. Possibly not applicable on a Dell machine.
After much helpful advice and very prompt responses from techee.co.uk , the installation of Win 7 professional went well. With hindsight, if the COA doesn't work first time, go straight to the Microsoft automated telephone activation number and follow the very clear instructions - virtually painless and takes about 5 minutes.
