Very easy really. I live in the north of England and regularly trip down via the Shuttle Offer or Tesco Shuttle points or special offers. Best option is a cheap @£25overnight in France - various chains available, I tend to use St Pol Formule 1 as it's next door to a supermarket. Come back with a car load of wine and cheese and toothpaste (really!). It's a bit of fun and certainly pays for itself. The Calais Wine bit only lasts about 45 mins as I have prebooked my choices, so I get 120+ bottles for £300 - £400, a birthday present or two and a couple of French meals for me. Sometimes pop over to Belgium. Calais Wine are very efficient and I have never had a mistake on the billing. Don't worry about the migrant situation, you might be unlucky but it would only be a delay - it really isn't as you might see it portrayed, for the car visitor anyway.
