The 5 day course was brilliant and I would highly recommend it, regardless of your level of experience you will learn a great deal and come away feeling confident about taking on any tiling job and with a rounded understanding of running a tiling business. Before the course I knew very little about tiling, having worked in an office for 15 years. After completing the 5 day course I know more about tiling than our local tiler, and I've already got my first job tiling a local salon (job secured on the day I returned from the course)! The training is full on and Darren does his best to squeeze his 25+ years of experience into the 5 days, it's a good mix of practical work and discussion / theory. The setting out techniques taught by Darren will save you lots of time on most jobs, and ensure that you are going to get the finish right and the tiles looking level at the end before you even start getting the adhesives out ! You'll get to learn about what types of tiles can be used in which situations, and how to overcome problems when the underlying surfaces can't support the job (e.g. when to use crack mats, concrete boards). You'll learn techniques for scribing and cutting all different types of tiles (e.g. ceramic, porcelain, natural stone) using dry cutters, wet saws, hand scribes, nippers, mitre blocks etc etc. You'll also learn what types of adhesives, grouts, sealants are required in each situation and how to save yourself money by buying the right products at the right quantities. Having started the week with very little experience, by the end of the week I was able to complete an entire bathroom bay from scratch including tile around obstacles such as wash hand basins, baths, corner cuts, windows and reveals, and even completed an artistic pattern as a centre piece and finish the job off nicely with grouting, polishing and learned how to apply silicone properly with no mess !
