I recently completed the Southern Africa loop with tucan. Overall the trip was ok but I think it's important to share some of the frustrating parts so other travellers can make an informed decision before booking because I wouldn't have booked had I known. The chores (cooking, washing up and truck cleaning) dominate the trip. After many long full day drives you get no time to relax as you have to clean up after or cook for 25 people. Cooking can take up to two hours and washing up has to be done by another group. Some camp sites have amazing pools but if you're cooking or cleaning you don't even have a chance to swim. While I don't mind helping out I don't go on holiday to spend most of my free time doing chores especially when some people don't pull their weight which caused a lot of friction in the group. I think tucan really need to consider hiring a cook like other over landers do to reduce the amount of work for passengers. The cost would be minimal but it would make a huge difference to the experience. The other problem with camping is we stayed in very isolated sites with absolutely nothing to do and no where to walk to the majority of the time. This meant a lot of wasted time sitting around in the middle of nowhere when I wanted to be out exploring Africa and meeting locals. We had two different tour leaders. The first was pretty good and gave us lots of information. The second was pretty useless and spent all the time in the front of the truck away from the group. Overall, I would have preferred to pay a bit more money and go with a different company as my main memories of Africa will be cooking and cleaning.
