My experience in Sri Lanka with SLV was amazing! Although at times it was tough being away from home and living with complete strangers, by the end of the 5 weeks I had made some really good friends. The skills and work experience you gain is like nothing available in the UK and has opened doors to new possibilities.

Great experience and met so many great people at the projects, local volunteers and international volunteers. Very beautiful country and this programme allowed the opportunity to explore it at the weekends. Had an absolutely amazing team in January and fantastic team leaders, that definitely worked out really really well for my house. Thank you all so much! One thing is that it would have been nice to know a few more specifics before going, as the website was a bit vague and misleading. I didn't really understand the different options of mental health, clinical psychology and occupational therapy etc as it didn't seem to make any difference when we were there and that caused confusion between everyone.

My experience in Sri Lanka is something I will never forget and always take with me as a tool in my life. It was at times an overwhelming experience but that is what made it so special. Doing scary things in a country as beautiful as this, helped shape me as a person and realize my capabilities in this world! After my six weeks of amazing memories and challenges I came back to the UK lighter, fresher with a spring in my step ready to take on almost anything!

I would recommend SLV and especially the psychology placement to anyone looking for an amazing experience both personally and for your CV. I did the psychology placement a year ago and had such a great 3 months and made so many amazing friends. The Sri Lankan's were so friendly and welcoming. My host family were absolutely amazing and I lived with loads of other volunteers which was really fun. Since finishing the placement, jobs I have applied for and suceeded in have been really interested in my experience in Sri Lanka. The placements themselves were varied, fun and challenging. I would definitely recommend doing SLV to anyone looking to enhance their CV and enjoy travelling a gorgeous country at the same time.

I did the Graduate Mental Health Placement for 3 months last year. While I was there I worked in the National Institute of Mental Health, which really opened my eyes to the ways in which mental health is viewed outside the UK. It gave me loads of hand-on experience of working in a mental health setting, and helped me get a job when I returned home. I have recommended SLV to many of my friends who have since ended up completing placements.

My time as a volunteer and coordinator within SLV was priceless. I would not have been able to attain my current job two weeks after my return from Sri Lanka if it was not for the invaluable experience across many different things. I have grown in confidence not only in my teaching abilities but in my ability to deal with people in sometimes difficult situations. I loved working with those who had either a mental illness or a disability, it made me realise I wanted to pursue a teaching career which involved those who may be disabled or have additional needs. It also allowed me to immerse myself in a culture which has helped me cultivate a more informed world view and I have made life long friends as I have done so. The SLV staff are all utterly fantastic, both UK and Sri Lankan Project Managers. I honestly could not have continued throughout doing things to as high a standard as I could if it wasn't for the staff reassuring me I was doing a good job and being there any time you needed them. I would advise anyone to do this, whether they are in uni or have been out of uni for a couple of years as I had. It is wonderful. Thank you SLV for giving me this experience.

After three months of living and working in Sri Lanka, I fell in love with the country and it's people. The placements were exciting, interesting and a whole new experience, and the SLV team and my fellow volunteers were fantastic.

Working as a Volunteer Coordinator for SLV for 3 months in Summer 2014 was one of the best experiences of my life. The projects were demanding but extremely rewarding - as a team of volunteers I really felt like we were making a difference. I felt like I got great experience of what it is like to work at a grassroots level for a growing international charity and gained a variety of skills throughout my time there. SLV is a friendly and approachable organisation. They really care about volunteer experience and project impact. Placements are varied and are tailored to what kind of work you would like to be doing - whether it be teaching, working at centres for those with additional needs, working at the National Institute for Mental Health or coaching sports. It will be an unforgettable experience living and working on really beneficial projects in a beautiful country! You'd be mad to miss this opportunity!

Last summer I had the most amazing oppertunity to go work on the teaching placement in Sri Lanka for a couple if months! My time out down as both a volunteer and a co-ordinator was INCREDIABLE to say the least. The projects were so rewarding and I felt like I really got to know the students and young people I worked with! The teams I worked with were full of energy and delivering lessons, traveling and relaxing with them made up some of the best parts! The project managers are very supportive and really care about the people who volunteer with them and constantly strived to provide the best placements for them quickly patching up any problems that came about! Staying with a family out there felt like the best way to explore And lean about the culture. It was not awkard at all as the family wanted us to get involved and the children were keen to sit with us and chat away! Sri Lanka itself is a beautiful country! And I am planning to go back again when I have the time to finish off traveling! The organisation is extremely well run and cheap compared to other places I looked at. The 24/7 support you recieve and the genuine desire to make sure your placement a fantastic experience is obvious! I would definitly recommend going out with SLV you will Meet some amazing people and get to visit a beautiful place!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with SLV. They are a friendly and encouraging group of people and the projects run all year round. I stayed with a family which enabled me to experience the daily life of Sri Lankan culture. As well as OT I taught English, which I have never done before but with good lesson planning and ideas from workshops I found this was not scary at all and actually went really well! The projects are varied and there is a lot of travelling on crowded buses....a real taste of Sri Lankan life! And with weekends off I was able to see so much of a beautiful country. The coordinators were approachable and any issues were resolved quickly. Well done SLV and thank you very much!

SLV has helped me both personally and professionally more than I can put into words. It was a real challenge for me to be so far from home, my family and friends and to really throw myself into something completely different and new. I don't regret a thing. A brilliant experience, met some fantastic people and made lasting friendships. Thank you SLV.

Fantastic placement! it's really not about getting something to put on your CV it's about learning about yourself, others, handling situations that may make you feel uncomfortable and clarification if clinical psychology is what you definitely want to go into. A wide range of projects are included so the days go fast and there was never a time when I didn't feel like I hadn't had a rewarding day. The only placement where you can practice clinical psychology in the field and gain so much varied experience so I recommend to anyone wanting to possibly do a psychology/nursing or social care based job in the future. The only downside is that the placement isn't exclusively psychology only and you will be put on (very few) teaching projects which SLV already informed you of anyway in advance but some people were disappointed with that. I personally don't want to be a teacher but loved the confidence I gained from leading a class of 20 youths and really loved teaching the cheeky, curious and at times challenging children but if you really want to avoid teaching then maybe you think about suggesting to be put on psychology based only projects although the teaching is definitely worth giving a shot - you have to remember that your sole purpose is to be there to help people less advantaged than you and ALL projects ensured that.

Spending three months with SLV in Sri Lanka has been one of the best experiences of my life... I still talk about it now, a year later! The team in Sri Lanka are amazing, they made me feel at home which was just what I needed having never been there before. The team in England successfully made me feel prepared for what was coming. It has also looked really good on my CV, and I didn't find it too hard to find a job when I got home. I wish I could go again!

After much research into volunteering I found slv to be the most ethically driven, as they continually provide care and teaching to individuals using detailed lesson plans that volunteers take over rather than constantly reteaching the same material as with most volunteering companies. I also gained invaluable experience in the national institute of mental health which is hard experience to find. it was very oorganised and helpful, the best experience of my life so far. Woukd definitely recommend.

Slv was the best thing I have ever done! Sri Lanka is not only amazing but the work that slv does clearly makes a difference and it is very noticeable! I just want to thank slv for allowing me to help them and without them I would not have been offered the job I've just got within a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital! So thank you again slv and definitely try it! You'll not regret it
