I tried using a cheap WalMart powered USB hub and immediately got an overvoltage warning. Cheap, poorly designed USB hubs will back feed power into your pi and can cause damage. Just go with the official Raspberry Pi USB3 Hub. It can be powered via USB-C 5V 3A for high power periferrals WITHOUT BACKPOWERING and OVERVOLTAGE warnings.
