I had the most wonderful time at Rachel Byass Ceramics on a 4-hour wheel throwing course – it was genuinely one of the most enjoyable and relaxing experiences I’ve had in ages. Rachel is an excellent teacher: calm, encouraging and incredibly knowledgeable. She demonstrated techniques clearly, guided us step by step, and was always on hand with helpful tips and reassurance, no matter your ability level.
Getting hands-on with the wheel was great fun, and it honestly felt like the greatest adult playground – we could make as much mess as we liked and simply leave it behind. I actually felt a bit guilty walking away from the chaos we’d created, but Rachel took it all in her stride with good humour.
We were also able to paint our creations, which added a lovely creative touch and made the experience feel really complete. Rachel’s studio itself is fantastic: beautifully set out, full of her own stunning designs, and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, from tools to paints.
On top of all that, her hospitality was exceptional. There was endless tea and coffee, and the homemade scones with homemade jam and cream were absolutely delicious – such a thoughtful and generous extra.
Most wonderfully of all, after fifty-plus years I’ve finally found my first true hobby – and I couldn’t be happier that it’s pottery. A truly memorable, welcoming and inspiring experience. I couldn’t recommend it more highly and will definitely be back.
