I took my horse to our Equine Teaching Hospital because he threw his left rear leg out in a very uncommon way. I thought it was his hock or stifle or maybe even his hip. Before me he was a work horse, as his owner and he went into canyons and such to retrieve bulls or cows, that wasn't catchable by other means. This owner and horse is known in our county, as the one that could do it, when no one else could. So when I say work horse, I really do mean work horse, as you see. Anyway at the exam they ran him through the mill with testing; lab work, neurological tests, blocking both back legs in three different places, x-ray and ultrasound and spinal tap. Just by the exam the diagnosis was leaning to EPM or some other neurological problem, even though he did know where his feet were during all of the testing. I was advised not to ride him until the test results came back. So needless to say, during the two week wait, I read many articles about EPM and other neurological problems and treatment. About all of them mentioned Natural Vitamin E. When all the lab and spinal tap results were in, everything was normal. The spinal tap showed that Buddy had ben exposed to EPM but was not an active case. In a way, we were relieved but still did not know what the issue was causing the odd movement in his back leg. While we were discussing the results, she told me to go ahead and ride him but be cautious. I discussed the Vitamin E supplement with her and she said it might now be a bad idea too put him on it and that she uses Elevate Concentrate. I put him on 10,000 units daily. I also started him on amino acids and together he has shown improvement throwing that rear leg out when walking. He has developed a nice top line and his coat is beautiful. I am riding him now and he doesn't seem to have any soreness or lameness, no stumbling. My next move is Chiropractor.

The has done wonders for my vitamin E deficient horse. He looks and acts like a completely different horse. I highly encourage horse owners with horses that have a hard time maintaining muscle mass, putting on a topline, and/or have a dull coat and are on poor quality pasture/hay to consult your vet about vitamin E deficiency.
