“I have a 7 year old who was doing well, one level ahead using another brand's curriculum for Level 2. But, this year when we started Level 3, he STRUGGLED. It was a spiral approach curriculum that also included lots of stories, geography and real life examples. My son was lost and overwhelmed with too much information. The curriculum was open and go, easy for me but way to cumbersome and intense for him.
Since switching to Apologia, he has been doing so much better. Granted we had to go back and start at the beginning of Level 2 since I noticed a difference in the methods and concepts taught, along with the mastery approach. He is able to complete 2 lesson per day in less than 30 minutes with no stress, for him or me. The teachers guide is super easy to follow, so I am not overwhelmed with prep work or understanding what he should be learning that day.
The workbook itself may include a super short story with real life pictures that look like photos (I think he prefers these over illustrations because they are more "real") but mostly, the text only covers the topic at hand, very briefly. The opening activities are easy and hands on but do not require a lot of cutting or gathering of supplies (thank goodness!) I just have th block tens set and linking cubes. The mastery approach helps him to better retain the information and I think the simple flow of the worksheets help him not feel overwhelmed, even if he has more than one worksheet to do, he breezes through them.

“We have level one and really enjoyed it- except for one thing. The pages you are supposed to use for lessons are not perforated. I am literally cutting up the book to get the pages out of the book without tearing up the pages. Level 2 is the same way. It is totally ridiculous and super annoying. Honestly I expected better. I have Apologia science curriculum so I know it can be done better. Please fix this small, but utterly irritating, feature.”
