Classic Ha Giang Loop by Gravel Bike Reviews

This was a really well organised and enjoyable tour in an amazing part of Vietnam. We were unlucky with the weather unfortunately, but it was still a memorable tour in all other respects and we had an excellent tour leader and driver in Thang and Van. The cycling is challenging, it goes without saying, but our bikes were more than up to the task and getting off the beaten track is always a great way of seeing a country.

The cycling was great and was just about the right level of challenge for me - unfortunately the early February weather was pretty poor -no rain bit a fair bit of mist at altitude and it was quite cold. The guide (Thang) and back up driver (Van) were both fantastic - Thang's English was perfect and this was important because he offered real insight into this lovely country. There were a few impromptu stops (eg to have a look inside a famer's house; on passing through a fabric villiage and to stop and chat to a women making rice wine) and these really added to the experience. Food en route was great - we really were able to get a good insight into Vietnamese food. On the whole, the hotels were good although a couple, while being perfectly functional could have been better, although I suspect in the smaller towns this would be tricky. My only real suggestion would be to maybe include a couple of extra cycling days but this would then also require a rest day or two. Really though, it was a memorable trip

We had a fantastic trip. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us, but this didn’t take away from the friendly, efficient service provided by Thang and Van for Art of Bicycle. This is a strenuous route but very doable with the low gear gravel bikes provided. I’d recommend this trip to keen cyclists who want to challenge themselves while vividly experiencing the culture and landscapes of Vietnam.
