Kathmandu to Pokhara Backcountry Bike Tour Reviews

4.6 Rating 5 Reviews
From planning to guiding, this was a wonderful tour! We biked from Kathmandu to Pokhara in the Kathmandu Valley. Don't let the word "valley" fool you--the ride was usually up one steep hill, switchbacking down, then up the next steep hill. And this in the midst of post-monsoon road washouts, which supplied technical challenges. Our guide, Laxman (supported by driver Sittarama), was wonderful at assessing our skills and suggesting times to go in the sag wagon and times to resume riding. The accommodations are best available, and sometimes they were very modest (as in broken showers) although always clean, and sometimes they were resort quality. The variety added to the authenticity of the experience. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough!

Our 11 days tour from Kathmandu to Pokhara took us through the villages in the foothills in this area. Very interesting. It was lead and accompanied by an excellent team of 5 from Pokhara Mountain Bike Adventures who looked after us extremely well. The route was all on mostly quieter public roads - some excellent tarmac, others rough gravel. We rode 380km with 9,200m climbing. The bikes were good although they lacked sufficient range for a few riders on some days. The trip was advertised as "high end" but village hotels were typically lower to mid-range, one or two even lacking a reasonable hot water shower. We rode in April and barely saw the mountains. At this time of the year until the monsoons clear the air, smoke and haze typically hides the Himalayas. The food was very good but almost exclusively Nepalese /Indian with minimal "western" food available. Overall very memorable and enjoyable.
