The Tailstock Swing-away is a terrific product, if only some flaws were updated. Taking advantage of similar technology that is found in the railroad industry, the Swing-away manages an awkward piece of machinery with ease and finesse. Unfortunately it is not quite ready to be marketed. Two flaws need to be dealt with first. One is that the threaded handle and rod that suck the bed up tight to the lathe does not start easily. The weight of the tailstock pulls the threaded rod down so that you have to use one hand to lift the tailstock and swingaway assembly up while trying to thread the rod into the hole and get it started. Sometimes this doesn't go smoothly and is a struggle. The other flaw is that the ways on the swing-away do not line up with the lathe ways, so another little struggle presents itself, also solved by lifting the tailstock while simultaneously sliding it onto the lathe's ways. What I used to do was set the tailstock on a cupboard located adjacent to the lathe that was about the same height as the ways and with some practice, I was able to learn to slide it up onto the ways in one not-too-smooth motion, which sometimes failed. As you can imagine, that was a bummer. I would think that every Powermatic owner must have difficulty with this, so the Swing-away is a welcome solution, if only these two flaws can be corrected.
