“Early Impressions of the Ergohuman Gen2 – A potential game changer..
After years of struggling to find the right office chair, I may have finally found the one. I'm just shy of 5'11", weigh around 235 lbs, and deal with chronic lower back pain from a car accident—not to mention, I have what might be the flattest butt of all time. Sitting comfortably for long periods has always been a challenge.
For the past 18 months, I used the Calamy Atlas (which I bought based on BTOD reviews). While it’s a solid chair for the price, the seat cushion was its Achilles heel. The build quality was impressive overall, but the cushion just didn’t cut it for extended use. If Calamy ever upgrades the Atlas with a better seat, I’d gladly pay over $400 for it.
I’ve been hesitant to spend serious money on a chair, mostly because I couldn’t wrap my head around what makes some chairs cost thousands. But I sit for 10+ hours a day—and often again at night—so my office chair doubles as my lounger. After watching nearly every BTOD video (some multiple times) and speaking with their reps, I landed on the Ergohuman Gen2.
Shipping & Assembly:
I ordered the chair just three days ago and was shocked when it arrived today—lightning-fast shipping. Assembly took about 10–12 minutes, very straightforward.
Initial Impressions:
Even on day one, I can already tell why this chair costs 3x more than any I’ve owned. The build quality is on another level compared to the Atlas, which was already decent for its price. I hesitated for months because the Ergohuman Gen2 looks like a typical office chair you’d find at Staples—but looks can be deceiving.
Recline & Tension Control:
The tension control for reclining is phenomenal. Unlike the Atlas, the Ergohuman allows me to rock back and stay in position without engaging my core to hold myself up. The Atlas has a similiar feature, but the tension control, even when maxed out, isn't enough to operate the way the Ergohuman Gen2 does. It’s the best recline experience I’ve had—feels like my back is floating. For the first time, I’m able to use a chair without locking the backrest.
Seat Comfort (Leather Model):
I opted for the leather seat based on BTOD’s recommendation and the reps’ advice—and wow, it’s leagues ahead of the Atlas. It has a unique “floating” or cradling sensation, likely due to the mesh underside. The seat even has a slight bounce to it, which is a huge upgrade from bottoming out immediately in my previous chair. Whether it will hold up to the 10+ hour work day test is yet to be seen... but at the very least, I'm not in near immediate pain like I am when sitting in the Atlas. Keeping my fingers crossed here, I haven't been able to find a truly comfortable seat on an office chair... perhaps ever.
Backrest & Lumbar Support:
This is hands-down the most comfortable backrest I’ve ever used. The adjustable lumbar tension is exactly what I needed for my lower back issues. It moves with me when I lean forward, keeping my back supported at all times. I need variable lumbar support depending on the day, and this chair delivers by allowing me to increase or lower the tension when needed... and, it actually works VERY well. I could probably nap in it.
Headrest:
The only area I’d love to see improved is the headrest. It’s comfortable when reclining but lacks in/out adjustability, which would make it more useful in upright positions. Still, it’s not a dealbreaker—just a suggestion for future models.
Final Thoughts (for now):
While it’s too early for a full review, I’m genuinely impressed. The Ergohuman Gen2 has already exceeded my expectations in comfort, build quality, and ergonomic support. I’ll report back after more time with it, but so far, it’s a huge win.”
