This was one of the worst purchases I have ever made online. I can capture barely ha F a dozen stations using the scan button, most of the time the sound stops dead after the initial static, and even the stations I get become silent after a few seconds. I bought this as a gift for my young niece who had expressed a fancy for a toy radio, and I am embarrassed and angry that after 6 months of waiting for me to fulfil my promise this miserable apology for a radio should be her reward, resulting in one very disappointed and upset child.

To review my new RetroRadio I did an A~B comparison with my audio system, B & W 703 main speakers with SVS SB13 Ultra subwoofers thru a Marantz 6006 integrated amp, listening to a Grace Digital Internet Tuner. Selecting a station is simpler with the Retro. Once both the Retro and the Grace are tuned to the same station the superior bass extension of the SVS subs is readily apparent as is the clearer and more detailed mid-range of the B & W floor standing main speakers. Style-wise the Retro takes top honors, resembling an actual radio that might be found in a doll house or a model train setup when viewed with a magnifying glass. The Grace tuner has a large illuminated blue digital display and offers an industrial appearance. I found that to reach comparable output levels with the Retro I had to hold it against my ear and even inside my ear, and even then the Retro didn't reach the volume level of the larger system. Where the Retro really outshone the larger system was in portability. The main system weighs approximately 500lbs and requires more power than the 2 AA batteries in the Retro are capable of delivering while the Retro can be easily carried in a pants pocket. It comes down to individual needs and desires, clarity and lifelike sound vs. portability and convenience. A difficult choice.
