This is a fun activity in Stepney, London

Whether you're fascinated by craftsmanship, want to add a new skill to your repertoire or are looking for an unforgettable couples' activity in London, take a look at this knife forging class taught by Tom at the Green Wood Guild, who'll guide you through making your very own carving knife. Being able to take a rough bit of stock steel and turn it into a beautifully functioning edge tool is extremely satisfying, and very empowering!

On this one-day class at Stepney City Farm, you will learn how to make a ‘straight’ knife, a brilliant wood carving tool used for everything from spoons to shrink pots, as well as being useful in many other larger projects. Don't worry if the idea of forging your own blade sounds intimidating, as this class is suitable for people with no tool making experience.

You will forge and sharpen your own blade, as well as carving the handle, walking away with a beautiful new tool!

Please note: This workshop is 18+

Had a great day forging my whittling knife. This is the first time I've done anything like this. Getting to use the equipment and learn the feel for the hammer strikes, using the machinery to put the bevels in etc was very cool. The instructors were super chilled and informative. Whittling the knife handle was intensely therapeutic. Can't lie, sharpening the knife is insanely tedious - but worth the effort in the end! Really recommend this to do - and, to any ladies purchasing this course for their menfolk, please, please, PLEASE consider doing it yourself!

Excellent class. It was definitely on the pricey side at £175/person, but for a whole-day workshop (9 am to 5 pm on a Saturday), materials, and three instructors' time (per group of up to 8 students, in our case we were 7), we felt it was worth it. The instructors are knowledgeable and just nerdy enough to satisfy one's curiousity without overwhelming with information or unnecessary generalisations. And the place is really lovely, a big farm in the middle of London, with goats and sheep and everything! There is practically no prior knowledge and experience required, except very minimal understanding of terminology and knowing how to hold a hammer and operate a drill, and they teach you how to do pretty much all the steps in the process yourself, while being there to help with the steps that are more challenging or take too long to master in a day. The resulting knife is a really nice whittling (Mora) knife that in itself is not just a souvenir but an invitation to continue crafting at home. Overall, a really fun day of making and excellent taster for several different skills, including forging, hollow-grinding, whittling, sharpening and more.

It was my partner's birthday present and he absolutely adored the knife forging experience. The teacher was very knowledgeableand helped him and the class throughoutthe experience. You do everything from hammering your own peace of metal to the wooden handle. Great experience

Tim and Archie were great. They explained and demonstrated everything in detail. You also get a basic understanding of the underlying process (forging, woodcarving etc.). I never felt lost on what to do. The class was very fun, chill and interesting. The instructors will help where they can (especially if you made a significant mistake during the process, to ensure you leave with a usable knife) but the end product will be your own, beautiful knife. I would totally recommend this experience.

Brilliant class, expertly taught. I was a complete newcomer to metal and woodwork but I quickly got to grips with it under very helpful guidance. It is a full on day but immensely satisfying and I'd heartily recommend.
