A first experience at the pottery wheel
This two-hour session offers a clear and enjoyable introduction to wheel throwing in a calm, small-group studio setting. Designed for complete beginners, it focuses on the essential first steps of working with clay while allowing you to experience the rhythm and satisfaction of the wheel.
What you will learn
With guidance throughout the session, you will be introduced to:
centring clay on the wheel
opening and shaping a simple form
controlling the movement of clay with your hands
understanding the basic process of wheel throwing
The emphasis is on developing familiarity and confidence with the material rather than achieving a finished result.
What to expect
Classes are kept small (maximum 6 participants), allowing for individual guidance and a more attentive learning environment.
The session includes:
a short introduction and demonstration
guided practice at the wheel
time to explore and develop your forms
The atmosphere is calm and supportive, making it suitable even for those who have never worked with clay before.
Important information:
Private classes are available at a higher fee.
Glazing (clear glaze) and firing are not included in the class price. These services can be arranged on the day for an additional fee (minimum £10, depending on how many pots you’d like fired).
Finished works must be collected within 14 days of notification that your pieces are ready; uncollected works will sadly need to be disposed of.
This class is designed for adults.
Please note: long fingernails may make it difficult to work on the wheel, as the techniques rely on fingertip precision.
