This introductory pottery workshop provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals of wheel throwing. Designed specifically for beginners, the session offers an opportunity to learn and practise the core techniques used by potters to create forms on the wheel.
The workshop begins with a tutor-led demonstration, introducing the key stages of the throwing process and the tools used in the studio. Participants will then work at their own potter's wheel, applying these techniques through guided hands-on practice.
Throughout the session, an experienced pottery tutor will provide individual instruction and feedback, helping participants develop an understanding of the five fundamental stages of wheel throwing: preparing and centring the clay, opening the form, pulling the walls, shaping, and finishing. Unlimited clay is provided, allowing learners to repeat the process and build confidence through practice and experimentation.
As with any practical skill, early attempts may be uneven or collapse during making. These outcomes form a valuable part of the learning process, helping participants understand the properties of clay and develop greater control on the wheel.
This is a make-and-take workshop. At the end of the session, participants may select one piece to take home on the day at no additional charge (additional pieces £4 each). Work can be air-dried at home and decorated if desired, providing a lasting reminder of the skills explored during the workshop.
Please note you may request midweek classes however you may be subject to a minimum total spend depending on group size.
