We tried wheel throwing for the first time this evening, it was so much fun! Fred was a fantastic teacher and very patient as its much harder than it looks and we required help on multiple occasions! Despite the challenges, we had a brilliant time and enjoyed making a few items we can take home! Looking forward to collecting and painting our items in a few weeks!

We really enjoyed our session at social pottery. The teacher was great and explained things in a great way. We ended up making 3 pots each, which we were thrilled with. Each pot is completely different and unique. My favourite part of the process was pulling out the clay once we had made kind of a volcano shape and also angling out the sides of the bowl. I never realised how difficult throwing pottery on the wheel is, on TV they make it look so easy. When you're trying it for the first time, even centering the clay was so tricky. It was great that the teacher and her assistants were on hand to help us centre the clay and give advice where needed. I only have 2 slightly negative comments of the session, firstly I think there was too many people on the session. I realise this is a business and to make it worthwhile they have to maximise attendance. However, we really did feel crammed in like sardines. Both I and my husband are not small men and have what I would describe as a husky build. Our legs were pressed against each other, which meant controlling the wheel with the peddle was difficult and on more than one occasion he accidentally stopped my wheel by moving his foot. Because we were crammed it so tightly, it felt like you couldn't spread out and get into a comfortable position and get low against the wheel to support your arm with your knee/leg. So I thought that was a shame. I think if there had been maybe 3 less people and then we had our wheels spread out a little it would have been more comfortable. Secondly, towards the end of the session we felt a little rushed. There was a lot of information to take on in the first half of the session and when we were allowed to have a more free-form play learning from our first bowl it felt very much like we were going to run out of time and we had to work as fast as possible... which kind of took away a tiny bit of the fun. I think we had had another 20/30 minutes it would have felt more relaxed. It was very apparent that there was another session after ours and we need to be finished asap. Again, I realise it is a small business and to make it profitable they need to probably get as many sessions in as possible over the weekends. It was just a small thing, but it was definitely noticeable. Again, I would like to reiterate that the workshop was super fun, and I would definitely do one again as another taster to using the pottery wheel. I think I will even consider doing one of the 6-week courses later in the year. If you are thinking about doing one of these workshops, I would say they are value for money and a great way to try pottery and to give it a go!

Threw 3 balls of clay learning the basics to create a pot and finally pulling out to a bowl. Our teacher, Amanda, was fabulous. She gave very clear instruction, was easy to understand, and very patient. Quick to provide guidance and assistance during the class. There was another lovely, helpful, assistant but unfortunately I didn't ask her name! Great introduction to the pottery wheel and will go on to do the full class. Will also look to do the other courses available, if they are anything like this one they will be very enjoyable too!
