This is a fun activity in Greasby, Liverpool

In this Pottery Throwing Workshop, you'll learn the basics of throwing on the pottery wheel, which includes centring the clay, opening the ball of clay, flattening the base, and pulling the walls up.

Designed with complete beginners in mind, this workshop ensures a supportive and enjoyable experience.

You'll be starting the process with pre-prepared clay, ready for you to form your pot by pulling up the walls of clay.

- Experience the feel of the clay and learn finger movements
- Discover how hands control the shape of the pot
- Utilize tools to shape and trim your creation

This approach helps you to understand what happens when you push the clay too much and how to correct it and how it can't be corrected because it has been overworked or pushed too far. This is an essential part of gaining confidence with the clay and having some fun.

When learning to throw on the potter's wheel it requires practise and discipline to continue even when you fail as this is the way to success with it.

Once you have done the initial pushing and feeling stage of the process, I then guide you on how to centre the clay, open the ball up and get to the stage where you pull the walls up, which will be familiar to you now.

You can try the whole process again yourself if you feel confident enough.

You can choose 1 of your best pots which will be fired with a clear glaze.

This will really give you the opportunity to know the full process by actually doing it yourself and if you enjoy it, remembering this process requires time and patience, then classes are available for you to continue.

Here’s how the class will run:

Demonstration of throwing process.

You’ll be guided through each step, from centring the clay to shaping your pot.

The workshop is a hands-on 1.5 hour session with a maximum of four people.

You’ll be working with clay and a variety of pottery tools, which will not only teach you the craft but also provide a relaxing and fun experience.

By the end of this engaging activity, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for the pottery throwing experience and at a later date you will collect clear glazed pieces you've crafted yourself.

This workshop promises to be an enriching and enjoyable experience, adding a personal touch to your pottery journey.

If you manage to make more than one pot and would like it to be fired and clear glazed it will be an additional £10.00 per pot payable on the day.

“I booked this pottery throwing session as a surprise for my husband and honestly didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be absolutely fantastic! Joan was such a lovely instructor. She explained every step clearly and made us feel completely at ease from the very beginning. The class was perfectly structured and moved at a great pace, giving us plenty of time to learn and enjoy the experience. What really stood out was how much Joan wanted us to get the very most out of the session. Thanks to her guidance and encouragement, we both ended up with a pot to keep as a lovely memory of our time there. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone who may be unsure about trying pottery throwing. Thank you, Joan, for making our time with you so special!”

“What a fabulous experience! Brilliant, passionate, patient, positive creative tutor. I booked last minute for 2 very special people. From the moment I was lucky enough to have their experience confirmed until walking out with those very special 2 people having produced a great pot each, it was more than they or I could’ve wished for. We were all beaming with delight and thanks. I feel very lucky and blessed that it was this studio that experienced their very 1st pottery throw down. Thank you from bottom of my heart !!”

“The whole experience was fantastic. Booking was easy and all of the information I needed was to hand. I booked this taster for myself and my mum. Mostly because my mum has always wanted to try out throwing on a pottery wheel. She loved it and so did I. Joan was an excellent teacher. Really well prepared and she made sure we all had a proper hands on experience and craft our own pot. She was brilliant at explaining the process and guiding us. The studio was easy to find and very well organised and equipped. We relaxed and had a great time. Thank you.”

“I absolutely loved this workshop. Joan was very welcoming and had got everything ready to give her students the best experience (although I was very lucky and the only student that morning). She's thought out the best way of teaching, breaking the whole process down into stages, for instance having a half-made pot for you, so that you can practice different techniques. You then make your own pot from scratch - and she is excellent at giving advice, helping you to remember the hand positions and techniques but doing this without taking over. She is very patient! I'd thoroughly recommend her workshops to anyone else.”

“Absolutely brilliant class which was suitable for complete beginners to learn the basics. Joan is really friendly and helpful and didn’t just do it all for us. Joan did a really good job of dividing her attention between the 4 of us and giving us guidance and reassurance. Highly recommend booking this class.”
