This is a fun activity in Abbey Wood, London

This beginner's class in spoon carving introduces you to the art of carving with an axe, a knife and a crook knife.

By carving a spoon, you can focus on becoming familiar with the tools of the craft without the pressure of knowing what to carve.

As you gain confidence with the tools, you begin to build a relationship with your small-scale carving and understand the subtle and addictive qualities of this new hobby.

We will use green wood, freshly cut with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.

You are supported through the whole process and encouraged to explore carving in your way and at your own pace. This is an exercise in slowing down and settling your attention.

All tools and materials are supplied, and at the end of the session, you will have your first carving started.

This workshop is carried out at "The Clearing", an outdoor purpose-built creative space in Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Boots and sturdy footwear must be worn (no open-toed shoes). All protective equipment is supplied.

Whatever the weather, the workshop will proceed, except under high wind conditions or lightning.

A large parachute canopy will keep you dry, and a beautiful central fire will keep you warm. A kettle on the fire will provide hot drinks to fuel you during this session. All included in the price.

I couldn’t recommend this class enough. The whole gang including volunteers were so warm and informative. They offered to help as much as I wanted and equally showed me how to do things myself in a clear, calm and safe way. I’m looking to connect with the organisation on a member basis for August and can’t wait! Be prepared not to finish your spoon but kick started on the journey.

I really enjoyed this workshop, nestled in the woods, protected by a canvas tent you are introduced to the joy of carving wood by hand. The teacher was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate, upon arrival we were given a welcome introduction to the location and a bit about what we were going to be achieving during the session. We picked our own freshly cut wood and got started. The instructions were clear and the tools were explained to us, then we got whittling. I'm really proud with my final peice and would highly recommend this class. The only negatives I would have is that we were not offered any coffee or drinks as the listing states, I luckily bought my own water as it was a hot day but a coffee would have been nice. Also the location is beautiful but as it is out in the wood the teacher kept leaving to chat to friends and passers by, whilst I appreciate the community is important here, a few times I was struggling with my task and had to wait until the instructor had returned to get assistance. Overall I really enjoyed my time in the woods whittling away at my own, handmade spoon and can't wait to finish and oil it. Thank you!
