In this class, students discover the traditional art of painting on smalto, the classic Mediterranean method for creating vivid ceramic artworks. Each piece begins as biscotto, clay that has been fired once and is ready to be transformed. We apply a layer of white glaze (smalto) onto the biscotto, creating a soft, absorbent surface that acts like a luminous canvas.
Before the glaze is fired, you paint directly on top of it using ceramic pigments. This unfired smalto allows the colours to spread, blend, and sink gently into the surface—an expressive technique that produces beautifully fluid lines and rich tones.
During the final kiln firing, the smalto melts and absorbs the pigments, sealing your artwork beneath a glossy, glass-like finish. The result is a shining, vibrant ceramic piece where the colours appear bright, deep, and permanent.
This class is perfect for anyone who wants to explore a traditional yet artistic method of ceramic painting, creating pieces that are both timeless and full of colour.
