Whether you've never sewn before and want to get the best possible start or you're a rusty novice looking to dust off your sewing kit, this sewing workshop in Northampton is a brilliant place to begin your journey.
This is a fantastic activity if you're looking to learn some new skills, have an interest in clothes making or just looking for a new and fun hobby.
The Stitch and Make Studio is a professional design studio based on the top floor of a Victorian boot and shoe factory, please note there are 2 flights of stairs (sorry, we do not have a lift).
It is here that Abi Jackson is based. Abi is a wardrobe supervisor, costume maker and clothes designer who has been sewing for over 4 decades. Emma Goodson supplies support on the day. Emma, runs her own business Pin Clothing. You are in very safe and hands!
On the day, you will only need to bring a keen interest to learn, we'll supply the machines, the fabrics and all the equipment. If you would prefer to learn on your machine, that's fine, please make sure that it works beforehand and that you have all the parts for it (an instruction book is handy too, but not essential).
Once you're settled in, we'll start right at the beginning with winding a bobbin, threading up and making those first tentative stitches. It's often when the simplest things go wrong that knock a beginner's confidence, so we'll look at common mistakes and easy fixes. We'll also cover different types of fabrics for the job, changing needles and what to buy for your first kit.
After lunch, you'll be shown how to lay out and cut a pattern for a tote shopper. This great bag can be made from repurposed fabrics such as old curtains and duvets. It's hard-wearing and is great to give as a gift to family and friends.
Biscuits and refreshments are on hand all day, and we have a break for lunch (bring a pack-up) although we have a good coffee shop just yards away if anyone forgets.
You will honestly enjoy yourself a lot. Ww design the workshop to be relaxing and fun. The studio is a very creative and welcoming space and the perfect spot to begin your sewing journey.
