Traditional kintsugi (‘gold joining’) is an ancient Japanese repair technique which uses lacquer (urushi) dusted with powdered precious metals to restore broken ceramic pieces. The process illustrates the wabi-sabi philosophy of finding beauty in the flawed or imperfect. Rather than hiding flaws, kintsugi highlights them to show the object’s history.
During this two hour workshop, your tutor will guide you through every stage of the process of fixing a broken ceramic item using a micro metal mix with ureshi resin to create your gold solution. You'll then use this solution, along with a special putty, to fix together your broken pottery, creating a beautiful piece of perfectly imperfect art.
The workshop is ‘easy’ kintsugi: an accessible introduction to kintsugi principles and techniques. Traditional kintsugi uses materials that take far longer to cure and harden, and pure gold powder is best used by more experienced practitioners.
This workshop assumes no experience of kintsugi, and will give everyone the knowledge they need to repair their own broken ceramics at home. We only work with small groups, so you will each get plenty of support and guidance throughout.
You are welcome to bring your own piece of broken ceramic but due to time constraints please ensure it only has one break at most. Otherwise we will supply pretty small broken pots to choose from. Guests will take away their finished pieces on the day - please bring a box with you to safely take your piece home.
