Looking for a hands-on woodcarving class in London? Join Harry and Johanna from Variegate and learn how to carve a beautiful textured hardwood dish for your home, using offcuts from their furniture projects! The dish you make can be used for storing little trinkets, jewellery and even used in the kitchen for serving sauces and snacks!
Our woodcarving classes are designed to be hands-on and beginner-friendly, with no prior woodworking experience needed. They're the perfect opportunity to explore your creativity and craft a unique piece for yourself or as a thoughtful gift!
**What to expect:**
- Safety is our top priority, so we'll start with a thorough safety briefing, familiarizing you with the tools you'll be using throughout the session.
- Once you're comfortable, it's time to get creative!
- You’ll select a hardwood blank sourced from our furniture business offcuts.
- We have blanks pre-cut in many shapes and sizes so there will be a unique piece for everyone to choose from! Total beginners will be guided toward softer woods that are forgiving to learn carving on!
- Listen to a short lesson on the characteristics of wood to ensure you understand why carving using specific techniques is so important to achieve a good result!
- With expert guidance and tutelage, you'll begin carving your dish using a variety of gouge chisels.
To complete your dish, you’ll learn how to apply mineral oil to protect and enhance the wood’s natural beauty, as well as receive tips on proper care and maintenance. Once it's ready, you'll take it home ready to be used -- plus a host of new skills to try again and again!
