This is a fun activity in Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle

In this innovative workshop, you'll learn how to create textured metal artwork using the modern electro-etching technique. You'll master methods for producing deep, interesting reliefs in zinc plates using vinyl, varnish and various drawing materials, taking home your own finished piece that can be printed onto paper or displayed as a beautiful object in its own right.

Concerned about working with metalwork techniques? This activity uses electro-etching, a more eco-friendly and accessible alternative to traditional acid etching, making it suitable for beginners while still offering fascinating creative possibilities.

Throughout the session at Incubate Printmaking's Newcastle studio, tutor Nick will guide you through the unique qualities of this contemporary printmaking method. You'll explore how to create effective textures and designs on zinc plates, discovering techniques that wouldn't be possible with conventional etching approaches. The workshop covers both relief printing (similar to lino) and intaglio etching methods, giving you versatile options for your creation.

By the end of this how-to workshop, you'll discover a distinctive artistic technique that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern, environmentally conscious practices. The skills you learn will open up new creative pathways, while your completed zinc plate becomes both a striking artwork and a printing matrix for future creative projects.

Nick went out of his way to accomodate us on a day that suited us. The session was very interesting, combining creativity and design with science and learning. Not that it would matter if you weren't confident with either as instructions were clear and resources provided for creative ideas. My daughter and I had a great afternoon and left with several prints as well as our etched zinc panels. A novel and interesting workshop.
