This is a fun activity in Harlesden, London

In this immersive workshop, you'll learn the Japanese art of sashiko embroidery, applying beautiful running stitch patterns to your choice of indigo or wine red natural cotton jacket. You'll master the fundamental techniques of this traditional craft while creating a wearable garment to take home.

Nervous about your embroidery skills? This activity embraces the slow, meditative nature of sashiko, making it perfect for beginners with no prior experience. The name 'sashiko' literally means 'little stab' – a reminder that this craft values patience over perfection.

Throughout the day at YICRAFTS studio, you'll discover both the rich cultural background and practical techniques of this Japanese embroidery tradition. Originally developed as a method for reinforcing or mending textiles, sashiko creates beautiful geometric patterns that add texture, warmth and visual interest to garments. The workshop provides comprehensive instruction in the basic principles and techniques, equipping you to continue your practice independently at home.

By the end of this how-to workshop, you'll experience the calming, mindful benefits of slow stitching while creating something both beautiful and functional.

I am childish enough to like classes where I take something away that I've made. Now I'm looking forward to wearing my embellished jacket. Our teacher was patient with my ineptness and I just wished we'd had a little more time.

The class was very well organised from booking to the day. I learnt so much about Sashiko and left with a gorgeous jacket in the making. I can’t wait to finish my project and wear it with pride! Thank you very much for teaching me a joyous skill.

A very wonderful, mindful time stitching and learning the history of sashiko. Gorgeous jacket provided, and also lots of inspiration to carry on the project at home. Very clear and practical instructions given before and after the class.

I recieved this workshop as a gift for my 50th birthday, it was a great experience as this craft is something I had wanted to learn for some time. The teacher Yifan was really good and kind, she taught us new ways of seperating the thread, tying the knot to start and end our work. The embroidery itself was not as complicated as I had thought, as it was well explained and done step by step. I would recommend it for a special gift to yourself or a loved one.

Yifan was a brilliant teacher, talking us through the history of sashiko and showing us the whole range of beautiful patterns alongside patiently teaching us the basics. The studio is great, really easy to get to from the Tube and full of natural light with plenty of materials to go round. It was awesome to be able to design our own jackets using sashiko patterns, and have that to take home after as a project to keep going on (one more for the work in progress pile!). A really lovely, chill day and opportunity to meet fellow crafters, too.

Really interesting introduction to Japanese Sashiko embroidery. Excellent teacher who explained everything clearly and patiently helped me (a beginner) with the work. I left the workshop proudly bearing my Japanese jacket and feel inspired to continue practising and learning more about the art of Shashiko embroidery. I eould certainly like to join further Sashiko workshops in future.
