This is a fun activity in Hitchin, Stevenage

Learn the art of wheel throwing at this fun pottery making class in Hitchin. If you're looking for some creative things to do in Hertfordshire, a half an hour drive from North London, this pottery workshop is ideal! Taught in a peaceful garden studio, you'll be able to unwind and relax as you discover the fun and addictive craft of wheel throwing pottery.

Our studio has 6 wheels and you therefore may be joined by others on the remaining wheels as most of our classes are small group classes. If you have a group of 6 or more people you will reserve all of the wheels for the session. Should you want a private class for a smaller group this can be arranged for a higher rate, please let us know.

Wheel throwing is wet, messy and creative fun for all! Don't worry if you're new to pottery making, this beginner-friendly class is led by a talented ceramicist who will take you through their top techniques and tips step by step.

In this pottery making class, you will get hands-on with your own clay creations so that you can get to grips with this captivating art form. You will have the option to use white clay and then paint what you make using a huge selection of beautiful glazes. After your craft class, your pottery creations will be glazed in a clear gloss and fired ready to be collected at a later date from the studio or posted for an extra postage fee.

Alternatively, you can choose to use clay which will not need to be fired and can then be taken away with you on the day. Air drying clay dries hard, can be later painted using acrylic paint and will be decorative only whereas with fired clay the pots will become pottery following firing and can be used functionally.

This fun pottery workshop is a great way to relax, learn something new and gain pottery-making skills in a fun and welcoming environment.

At the end of this pottery for beginners class, you'll have a beautiful handmade item to keep as well as some newfound wheel throwing skills — plus a potential new love for this exhilarating craft!

Really nice, gentle beginner session with friendly and knowledgeable hosts. We each made one pot from a ball of clay on the wheel, from learning how to centre the clay and cone up, through to shaping the pot, with lots of step-by-step advice and hands-on help; nobody was left behind. We were then introduced to a couple of different kinds of underglaze in a variety of colours and given time to decorate. There is a month's wait for them to be fully dried, glazed and fired and then we can go to pick them up, so I can't comment on how ours will come out, but there were some wonderful examples around the workshop. These pots will not be fired hot enough to ensure that they are watertight, but they are food safe, so you could expect to make a small pot or bowl for snacks or trinkets in this session. Great fun with nice people and an ideal introduction to the craft.

Very informative and fun. The small class size was ideal for us as we got the attention we needed from the instructor!

Really enjoyed this, clear instructions, everyone came away with a decent pot at the end. Easy to book. My only significant feedback is that it felt a bit cramped having 6 wheels in that back room, felt like I was going to trip over something or someone. Maybe slightly shorter introduction chat and moving on more rapidly to the teaching might reduce pressure on time. Definitely very good though and would go again.
