This is a fun activity in Slaithwaite, Leeds

Join this one-on-one introduction to wood turning workshop near Huddersfield and learn the foundational skills of this rewarding craft. In this private, three-hour activity, you'll receive dedicated tuition from the Happy Turner, guiding you through every step of the process.

Wood turning is a fascinating woodworking technique where you use hand-held tools to shape a piece of wood as it spins on a lathe. You'll learn how to safely operate the machinery and use specialised gouges and scrapers to transform a simple block of wood into a beautifully smooth, symmetrical object.

The workshop is designed to build your confidence from the ground up. You'll start with a wooden spindle to practise and hone your skills. If you're comfortable, you'll move on to create your very own finished piece to take home.

**For example, you could make one of the following (this will depend on your confidance and what is available on the day) if you want to turn somethign specific please contact us in advance of the lesson or look at our other listings:**
- A 6" x 2" bowl
- An apple or pear
- A tea light holder
- A small candlestick
- A bud or twig vase
- A snowman
- A christmas tree

You’ll leave this session with a fantastic sense of achievement and a beautiful, handcrafted item that you made yourself, ready to be displayed with pride.

Had a great afternoon. Glyn was incredibly knowledgeable and very patient and supportive. The 3 hours just flew by. The class gave me the confidence to go and give wood turning a try myself! I'm so unbelievably chuffed with the bowl that I made (with a little help ).

I had a great wood turning introduction course today with Glyn. He is a very knowledgeable man, with a pleasant, reassuring manner. He demonstrated all the required tasks stage by stage, ensuring felt confident to follow his lead. I am really pleased with my finished article, a bowl, which is now on display in my home. Chris.

What a fantastic experience - this was a Christmas gift for my dad (74) and sons (20 and 10) and I couldn't have chosen a better activity with better teachers. The workshop is in a beautiful location and is so well set up with individual lathes and equipment for everyone. Nothing is too much trouble, they explain really clearly and are happy to keep going over stuff or demonstrating things. Glyn and Sue are down to earth and super passionate and skilled. They are great teachers, particularly with my youngest who is AuDHD, they were just so chilled with him, and adapted their teaching easily to suit him. He was relaxed and able to take everything in and it was a joy to watch. Unusually he didn't need my support as he was so comfortable. I honestly cannot believe we came away with such professional looking items - I didn't expect that at all and everyone was super chuffed. I hadn't booked on for myself, as I expected to need to support my son, but Glynn insisted on helping me to have a go myself , it was fab. It is the best money I have spent in a long time, we have memories to treasure as well as lovely things we made, hopefully we will be able to go agaon.

I came back for a second lesson because I enjoyed the first one so much. The new studio is great with loads of room to get around all the equipment. I can’t thank the Happy Turner enough for his patient tuition and for fixing all my mistakes - I’ve come away with a piece I will treasure.

I purchased this three-hour class as a birthday gift for my partner and we had an absolutely fantastic time. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and friendly, making us feel completely at ease from the moment we arrived. Everything was clearly explained—from the different machines and tools to their purpose and how to use them safely. They were always on hand to offer help and guidance, and it was clear they have a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for woodturning. We were given a choice of wood for our bowls and left with two beautiful, polished pieces that we’ll treasure forever. Thank you for such a valuable experience and for introducing us to a new-found interest. We’d love to come back and make something again and would absolutely recommend this class— it was worth every penny.
