This is a fun activity in Edinburgh
Join this blacksmithing workshop in Edinburgh and learn the fundamental basics of blacksmithing in a supportive and engaging environment.
You'll begin with a quick hands-on exercise designed to introduce you to key techniques, followed by an intriguing overview of metallurgy and the fascinating history behind hot forging. Throughout the day, you'll have full control of the fire and work directly at the anvil, allowing you to gain practical experience before starting to forge your very own knife.
You'll be making a blacksmith or Viking knife, though it has many other names and theories around its origin. This project is taught because of its nice, elegant design and often physically challenging but basic processes. It's made from one piece of steel, then hardened and tempered, resulting in a domestic knife and cherished ornament.
This is a practical experience, so be prepared to get your hands dirty. However, there's nothing to worry about, as an expert blacksmith will be there to guide you every step of the way. Classes are small, with up to five people per session. You'll keep all your work and learn how to finish and care for your projects. There's no rush, and you can take your time enjoying the Pitt Street food market during the one-hour lunch break.
**Please note:** The course starts at 10 am, includes a one-hour lunch break, and ends before 4 pm.
