This is a fun activity in Edinburgh

As the days grow cooler and autumn meals return to the table, bring a handmade touch to your kitchen with this two-hour pottery workshop in Edinburgh. You'll hand-build two genuinely useful pieces that'll become your everyday kitchen companions: a spoon rest for your busiest cooking moments and a ceramic grater for fresh garlic, ginger, and all those aromatic ingredients that make seasonal cooking magic.

Settle into the Edinburgh Open Workshop and discover how turning everyday needs into clay forms is genuinely satisfying. Chiara, your friendly instructor, will guide you through hand-building techniques tailored to your pace – whether you're completely new to pottery or already enjoy working with clay. You'll learn how shape and texture work together to make pieces both beautiful and functional, creating a resting place for your cooking spoon and a textured surface perfect for grating.

Explore decorative marks, carved details, and colourful slips in earthy autumn shades or whatever palette speaks to your kitchen. Keep your designs understated and minimal, or experiment with expressive, playful patterns. With a small group and warm guidance throughout, there's real space to explore and discover what feels right for you.

After the session, your pieces stay at the studio to dry before being glazed and fired for a durable, food-safe finish. In a few weeks, you'll collect finished pieces ready for real life – functional art that'll bring joy to your cooking routine every single day. Or, if you'd rather, they make a thoughtful handmade gift for someone who loves to cook.

“I had a great time at the workshop and can't wait to see my two pieces. Chiara is a wonderful teacher and talked us step-by-step through making a garlic grater pot and spoon rest. We learned and used two techniques - pinch pot and slab building - during the class, both were easy for beginners. We then had plenty of time to decorate the pieces with tools to create texture, stamps to write names/words and a great selection of colourful slips. The class was full but Chiara paid good attention to everyone. I'm keen to return and try a different class.”
