“The directions on how to get into the building was not designated in the instructions. We had to wait for someone to come out to enter. Before that, we tried calling the phone number in the confirmation email, and no one answere. Went to rooftop top where it said class was to be held. No one there. Asked maintence person where the class was being held. Was directed to a room, where upon knocking, was told we were early and to go to the roof top. They did not say to come back. Waited for class on rooftop, but no one was showing up. Finally another couple came and was as confused as we were.
Heard some noise from a different patio below us, and saw what looked like the class. Yelled down to ask if it was the gold mending class and was told yes. The teacher came and got us and took us back to the original room (where we were told we were early and to wait on the rooftop.)
It was hot outside, and not enough shade umbrellas, and upon entering, the main room smelled like pot where another class was going on.
The teacher was very nice, but the space was too compressed. Also, the class was overly simple for the price, $90. I would not recommend this class to a friend. But again, teacher was super nice.”
“We LOVED our instructor Alex. Absolutely amazing fantastic teacher. We got to select our pottery, smash it with one hit, and put it back together. My favorite thing was how Alex brought the entire class together through laughter. We were talking about all sorts of different life experiences connecting it to our kintsugi work. I really really liked the class. I would highly recommend taking a class with Alex!”
“The class was great and our instructor Lo (sorry if wrong spelling) was fantastic. She was very informative, attentive and very fun. The terrace has a gorgeous view and made for a very fun class. My only small feedback would be to have more options for the ceramic pieces to choose from. We will be looking into other classes done with her. :)”
“Our instructor Lo (I think that’s how it’s spelled?) was a gem. She was easygoing and very interactive with us. The location is amazing, a terrace on a 10th floor of a building. Loved the class, would come back!!!”
“While I managed to reassemble my piece, this workshop left me wanting more.
Though the steps to the process were shared, there was no information shared about the art form of Kintsugi.
Having an actual Kintsugi piece to admire would help attendees know what they're striving to replicate would have been a nice touch. And along those lines, a brief explanation of the art form's history would have helped give some depth to the workshop.
That being said, rather than being a Kintsugi workshop, this class feels like a general introduction to this art form.
While I have never practiiced Kintsugi, I own a mended bowl and can tell that much more goes into this art form than the steps outlined during the workshop.
And while I understand why gold is not used (seeing how difficult it is to mend a piece a lot of gold would go to waste), Kintsugi being an art form specifically using gold, silver, or platinum, it would mean that using anything else (we used mica) would make the workshop more of a simulation of the art form or an introduction to the technique.
The workship name mentions gold.
It would manage expectations and be more true to what's offered to remove that word in the name or to explain things in the workshop description.
As for the moderator (who wasn't Daisy), while she was nice, she seemed challenged by the roadblocks half of the people at my table were experiencing... the epoxy was acting weird and they couldn't reassemble their pottery piece.
Adn most of the evening, it felt like we were left on our own to figure things out.
I actually managed to reassemble my piece because I improvised on the instructions provided.
Despite leaving with the feeling of wanting more, it was a nice evening.
The people at my table were gregarious and the setting was lovely... outdoors overlooking the DTLA skyline.”
