If you’ve been struggling to learn milk steaming from YouTube and doomscrolling Instagram watching baristas knock out rosettas and wondering why you can't seem to land it, this is your remedy.
Our instructor was incredibly knowledgeable and provided the kind of real-time feedback and quick corrections that you can't get from screaming at your screen and wasting gallons of milk.
My class size was small, which is a huge plus! We started by practicing with just steaming water and aerating/vortexing to get the mechanics down before moving to the real thing.
I highly recommend bringing your own machine (just give it a good descale and clean the steam wand first!). While the shop has commercial machines, learning on your own gear is invaluable since every machine has its own personality. Make sure to empty our your water tank and drip trays when transporting! (they'll provide water and outlets) - recommend bringing an extension cord as well.
I brought my trusty Breville Barista Pro, and interestingly, its less powerful steam wand actually made for a better learning environment. Because it’s slower than a commercial machine, our instructor could give live feedback throughout the process rather than everything being over in 10 seconds. My classmate and I took turns using my machine to steam milk and get feedback on our technique. (Note: if you're not really not comfortable sharing your machine, don't bring it.)
The class blends perfectly into the Latte Art session which immediately follows, where you get to apply your new steaming skills immediately by steaming your own milk, then pouring your own art. They are generous with the espresso shots and the help - highly recommended!
We poured water first to get the hang of the pour speed, then poured hearts, and then jumped straight to rosettas! You'll leave the class feeling smarter, and you'll have a nice little piece of artwork that you poured. Highly recommend.”
