Protecting yourself from the suns harmful rays is very important, but did you know that the majority of sunscreens are really bad for the environment, and not great for your health either? That’s where Shade comes in; it’s made with just four natural ingredients – Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax and Zinc Oxide (you can read more about what each of these do in the Environmental Information tab), all of which are eco-friendly and kind to your skin. The sunscreen is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 25, whilst also moisturising and nourishing your skin. It’s completely cruelty free and is not tested on animals.
Most ‘normal’ sunscreens contain lots of nasty chemicals, many of which are harmful to marine life, which means if you go swimming in the ocean, your sunscreen may be seeping these chemicals into the environment and causing damage. Shade doesn’t contain any of these chemicals, therefore it’s marine and reef safe, and won’t cause any damage like coral bleaching. The four ingredients in Shade are non-toxic and non-nano. You can read more about what makes Shade different to ‘normal’ sunscreens in the Environmental Information tab.
Shade sunscreen is available in two sizes, 15ml and 100ml, both of which are contained in a recyclable aluminium tin. Don’t worry, the tin won’t leak – the melting point of beeswax is 64°C, so unless you’re visiting Death Valley you’ve got nothing to worry about. The sunscreen will soften at warmer temperatures, but not so much that it liquifies.
How to Apply?
If it’s cold and the sunscreen is quite firm, rub it vigorously with warm fingertips to make it softer, or scoop some out of the tin and warm it between your hands. Then just apply generously, and reapply regularly, particularly after exposure to water or after sweating. For an idea of what we mean by generously, Shade recommend applying approximately a teaspoon for an adult face, and a shot glass full for an adult body. Be aware that using an inadequate amount of sunscreen effectively square roots the SPF, so an SPF50 would be rendered an SPF7, and an SPF25 would be rendered an SPF5!
Please note, natural mineral filter sunscreens such as Shade work differently to chemical UV filter sunscreens. Shade creates a layer on top of the skin to protect it, whereas chemical UV filters create a chemical UV barrier within the skin. As such, Shade can leave a white cast on your skin when applied, which is the physical barrier sitting on top of your skin. Don’t worry, this will wash off.
Safety Information
This product is not tested for water resistance. The sun’s rays are most intense and dangerous between 11am-3pm. Take precaution and avoid the midday sun. Do not stay in the sun for too long, even when protected. Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight, and where possible, seek to wear long sleeved clothing and hats when in the sun for a prolonged period of time. SPF25 means you are protected from 96% of rays, but that also means a damaging 4% are still reaching your skin. If you start to feel burning, cover up or move out of the sun. Burning is your skin’s warning system that you have exposed yourself to the damaging rays for too long. Sunscreen should be used as an additional protection against the sun’s rays, not relied upon as the only protection. Topping up your SPF25 sunscreen will only ensure you are still protected for approximately 25 times the length of time it would normally take you to burn in the same conditions without any protection, it will not prolong the amount of time you can spend in the sun. Inadequate application will also reduce the SPF dramatically. Apply generously for best results.
