Frame Builder's Transparent Finish - Hochglanz Reviews

4.5 Rating 20 Reviews
This works great but requires several coats to get a smooth effect. Also it depends very much on the underlying paint being smooth. Applying this over a rough finish will merely make it into a rough finish which is shiny. Don't spray from too great a distance as it will not be smooth enough, and don't get too close or it will drip and pool. My advice, if doing your first respray, try it on the forks or handlebars first, to get used to it.

I purchased this alongside Spray.Bike paint -- the paint was great and the guide for usage was fairly comprehensive. For the lacquer, however, there were no instructions on their site. I ended up creating a fair few runs and places where it coalesced into drips mostly due to it coming out in vastly greater volume to the paint. If you're experienced with using this kind of spray-on varnish, maybe this would be no surprise -- I mean, maybe this behaves in a typical way to other lacquers. To me, however, as a novice and someone who chose Spray.Bike mostly due to how easy it looked, it was a bit of a shock to have what was actually a fairly nice, uniform paintjob, be slightly destroyed. You can fix the issues obviously, but it would've been nice to be prepared. I assumed it was similar in characteristics to the paint itself, which was an error. All in all -- probably 'works' if you know what you're doing -- it would be nice to see some information on the site about how to use the other finishing/prep items for sale other than the paint.I made a short video about my experience with the paint and varnish here --[...]

Re-sprayed my grandsons bike and it looks very good. Although one tin would just about do the frame, I used half of an extra tin to apply two coats. The finish is matt but, by using the varnish spray, it's now comes up quite glossy.

Used on a raw steel bicycle frame for protection , first coat spray from 20cm distance , keep moving , leave 45mins , second coat same , third coat to finish , one tin gives about 2.5 coats , no runs looks great !! would highly recommend !!

Labelling as varnish rather than a shade could be clearer but it does - ahem - what it says on the tin. Does’t seem to attack decals like you always risk in this game.
