“I love these pads. Period. The mask pad landscape has been bleak ever since Team Wendy stopped making mask pads. Unfortunately, most current pads are made of low-density, open-cell “couch cushion” foam that does very little to protect umpires from the ever increasing risk of concussions. Although, kudos to our good friends at All-Star and their FM4000MAG pads, which at least include additional plastic protection on the bottom pad in addition to extra foam; at least someone is looking out for our heads. The only downside to the All-Star pads is their size, they're huge and take some getting used to (I currently use them, so I’m speaking from firsthand experience). When I saw Gerry Davis introduce their own new pads on their site, I grabbed a set to see how they’d compare (the bar is pretty low), and wow, was I surprised. They’re great! I’d highly recommend them to anyone looking for mask pads that offer more protection than the OEM “couch cushions” many manufacturers provide. They’re so good, in fact, that I’ll be buying two more… because I’m one of those umpires with four masks. Why so many mask? Because YOLO, I guess. Bottom line: buy these pads. They’re great.”
