About Happy Little Soles:

Happy Little Soles is a family business committed to the importance of the right footwear to allow children’s feet to develop naturally. It was founded by enthusiastic barefooter Kate Harrington, with a mission to promote and make barefoot shoes available more widely.

Happy Little Soles was founded in 2010 in response to the frustration at the issues around children’s shoes available in the high street. Kate came to barefoot shoes when her younger daughter was struggling with shoes and balance and a series of chance conversations led her to Happy Little Soles and the solution to Keala's balance problems!

The more research she did, the more sense it made and the more amazed she was that these options weren’t more widely available. Years of practicing Yoga had taught her the importance of posture, alignment and the role of feet in maintaining healthy posture and good core stability. However she quickly realised that many of the exercises she had been doing were trying to put the flexibility and strength back into her feet that shoes had taken away! It was the light bulb moment! Keala stopped falling over, the family embraced barefoot shoes and Kate took on Happy Little Soles.

Happy Little Soles is committed to making the best barefoot shoes available in the UK and to offering a variety of different brands so you can be sure to find something to suit your child’s feet. We personally select every pair of shoes on our website, making sure they meet our strict criteria to be as close to barefoot as possible.

We work hard to find something to suit every stage of walking from those first steps onwards and for every situation from school shoes to snow boots. We source brands and styles to enable us to fit every possible type and shape of foot and test and measure all of the shoes ourselves to ensure the best possible fitting guidance.

Our aim is to provide the excellent customer service, unbeatable product knowledge and support necessary to enable you to choose the right brand and style for your child and to give you the information and reassurance to fit your own children’s shoes at home.

These are excellent boots. I was torn between rating them 4 or 5 stars, and here’s why: Pros: These boots are extremely comfortable for barefoot walkers. Their soles are more robust and padded than those of other, lighter barefoot shoes (I really like the Vibram Vi-S and Vi-B, and wear them constantly in summer). By contrast, these boots will allow me to stride confidently on rocky paths: while able to feel the ground underneath and grip with my toes, standing unexpectedly on a sharp rock doesn’t hurt. They offer the perfect balance of barefoot experience and foot protection for a long walk on rocky, broken ground. In addition, the soles of these boots are the grippiest I’ve ever had. They stick fast to everything from grass to hard rock. Additionally, the additional texture feedback of the barefoot shoe allows for small slides on scree or gravel to be easily controlled. In comparison, both of my companions - who were wearing walking-specific but non-barefoot shoes from good brands (North Face and Merell) - were having trouble on the loose scree of a narrow and rocky mountain path. My boots were so grippy that I ended up being the terrain guide for our steep descent because I was much less likely to slip. They are COMFY. Compared to my usual barefoot shoes these have a good squish to the zero-drop soles. I wore them for only the third time on a hike up The Black Mountain in Wales. I arrived back at my tent after an 9-hour walk, after covering about fifteen miles of narrow rocky paths and steep mountain sides, with no blisters and extremely happy feet. I’ve been a barefoot walker for years, now, on and off. I wear Vibrams in summer and usually keep non-barefoot walking boots etc. for winter or hiking, but these could make me go all the way! Their key benefit is that they are barefoot shoes - they allow my feet to be feet, and thus give the most comfortable hike I’ve ever experienced with zero foot pain or stiffness during or afterwards. At the end of the walk, my feet feel as ready to go as they did at the beginning. Awesome! Cons: Though these boots are very comfortable, they are a bit too wide for me around the heel and top of my foot - but this is an issue I often have. I have to wear thick socks and cinch the laces quite tight to get them to fit well enough for walking a mountain. Regardless they work very well and, properly-tightened, my toes don’t touch the ends of the shoes on the downhills. They are… not fully waterproof, as far as I can tell. Admittedly, my test environments for this haven’t been ideal. They’re definitely waterproof enough for a quick dunk in a boggy path, or for shallow ford, but not probably not enough to keep your feet dry in sustained rainfall or a long wet hike. That said, they do what’s needed - make sure I don’t have soggy socks all day because I stepped on one boggy puddle at the start of the walk. That said, they do dry quickly and they keep a good bit of the water off on a dry hike. So, on account of the imperfect waterproofing and the unfortunate size issue (especially given the women’s boots are narrower than the men’s), they get four stars from this very happy customer. Note: they also fit true to size according to Happy Little Soles’ size guide - but NOT according to Zero’s information for U.K. sizes.
