“I bought this cable to rewire fluorescent lighting fittings to suit T8 LED replacement tubes.... 1. WARNING - ALL FITTINGS a) It is important that a lighting fitting modified as described below is not subsequently fitted with a fluorescent tube, as the tube heaters would be severely overloaded, possibly causing the tube to shatter. Some of the LED tubes come with a label that warns against the fitting of a fluorescent tube. If such a label is not supplied, permanent marker should be used to write the following warning prominently on the fitting.... 'WARNING: THIS LUMINARE HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO OPERATE ONLY A 220-240V LED TUBE. NOT FOR USE WITH ANY FLUORESCENT LAMP' b) ONLY modify a fitting that is in good condition - and this includes the lampholders! c) DO NOT be tempted to wire the mains supply to ONE lampholder only - the 'mains supply end' of LED tubes ARE marked, BUT the 'other end' is a short-circuit (to maintain compatibility with conventionally wired fluorescent fittings). Fitting an LED tube 'wrong way round' to a fitting wired 'one end only' would place a short circuit across the mains supply. d) DO NOT use any incorrect cable type to wire the interior of a lighting fitting - the cable core type and size and the insulation type are all important for safety! 2. CONNECTING NEW CABLES TO LAMPHOLDERS Almost all T8 lampholders have 'spring clip' type wiring entries, where a solid-core cable is connected by simply pushing it into place. Disconnecting cables from these usually requires the use of a jeweller's screwdriver or similar to release the spring clip. There is considerable variation in the method of release - some simply require a small diameter object to be pushed into hole adjacent to the cable entry, others require gentle 'levering'. Proceed with caution! The new cable should be stripped-back to match the removed cable. 3. ELECTRONICALLY BALLASTED FLUORESCENT FITTINGS Whilst there are T8 LED replacement tubes suitable for electronic ballasts, they are more expensive than the 'cooking' variety, AND they are rather fussy about which manufacturer's ballast they will work with. It is therefore better to remove the electronic ballast and wire both the lampholders in series across the incoming mains supply. This requires longer lengths of cable than those already in the fitting. The ‘ballast wiring cable’ supplied by Lampshop Online cable has the same size conductor (0.8mm) as most T8 fluorescent lighting fittings. Some T12 fittings may use different cable sizes. 4. MAGNETICALLY BALLASTED FLUORESCENT FITTINGS Kits are available that comprise a tube and an 'LED starter' (which is just a short-circuited item that looks like a starter). The original tube and starter are removed and both replaced with the items from the kit. This is very simple to carry out, but.... a) The continuing presence of the 'starter' may cause confusion regarding the type of tube that is fitted. See the warning in 1. above. b) An aged ballast choke and capacitor are still in circuit - it is possible that these may fail. For both the above reasons, it may be worth considering removing the ballast choke, the capacitor and the starter and then rewiring the fitting (as in 3. above). The starter hole should be blanked with a blind grommet.”
