“Ram was received about 2 days after placing the order. Installed and worked perfectly. Macfixit should give lessons to other companies on how a business should be run. I will definitely recommend to others.”
“No problems. Easy to order. No surprise costs added at the last minute. Good price. Arrived within the specified timeframe. Will use these guys again.”
“I installed this upgrade on two of my mac mini mid 2007 after testing it on the first.
System information does report 4 GB of RAM, but Mac OS Lion it only uses 3GB of RAM.
Due to a 32-bit EFI (with 64-bit CPU) the machine is limited to booting into a 32-bit OS. In Apple land this means being stuck at Lion aka 10.7 only and no OS upgrade past that. Probably the reason why Apple is adamant about the mid 2007 not being upgradable past 2 GB.
IMHO the upgrade is still worth it.
The effective upgrade from 2GB to 3GB adds enough breathing room for Lion to be usable again. Previously the machine running EyeTV had to be rebooted at least twice a week to be responsive. It's been up for almost a month now and still working fine.
Thanks macfixit and OCW for pushing the envelope.
Additional hints:
- OWC published terrific videos on youtube on how to open the various mac mini models. Talking about customer service for a product. Love it!
- While you have the case open swap the HDD for a cheap SSD. Your relocated sector count is probably too high anyways.
- The successor model, the early 2009 mac mini, can take full advantage of an 8GB upgrade.”
