“My mid-2011 iMac was running like a dog (spinning balloon wheel) and took minutes to load applications. Apple assured me the machine was running ok but before I turfed it I thought I’d try a 500GB OWC SSD.
I installed it (bought the install kit as well) and now apps load in seconds and for all purposes its now a new machine.

“Once I got it working, this has made my aged secondary Macbook Pro 2010 so much faster to boot and operate. With a new battery it's like new. Very Happy. Installation was easy.
However, with a computer as old as mine there were some issues. Firstly after the simple install, my computer couldn't see the new hard drive, so I had to reinstall the old one just to make sure it wasn't a motherboard issue. Tick, then installing the new HD again, it still couldn't see the new HD. I found a hack on the internet which I've now passed onto Macfix to include in future instructions.
Open Terminal during the recovery start up.
Type: diskutil list
find the new HD
then format it: diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ NewDisk /dev/
insert the name of the new disk between the < and > i.e
The new disk was formatted and rebooted and was now listed on Disk Utility and I was then able to install the mac OS.
Not too hard or complex and well worth the effort.”
