“The unit is Awesome, and if it weren't for the fact that I cant get an update for the software you need to run it, without paying 120 AUD, I would be giving it five stars. I have owned my unit for 13 months, and without the update it will be rendered useless, unless I want to stay pre Big-Sur operating system. I am going to pay the money, because I need the system to work, but this was not explained anywhere during purchase, and I find it predatory behaviour. The forums are full of people who are feeling blind-sided and exploited. I am posting this here, so you at least have some indication that you may have to pay another 100+ bucks 13 months from now..”

“This OWC 4 bay enclosure is the same basic design as previous models and so set up and usage is similar. The enclosure fan does make a low level, but unnoticeable hum. The previous ones I had ran a bit hot, but not so with these ones. Thunderbolt capability does make data transfer fast.
I would like the drive indicator lights to be directly over each of the drives as it is sometimes a bit hard to work out which drive is being monitored especially with the covers in place.
There's not much documentation that comes with the enclosure but there is information on OWC website and is there excellent responsive customer service. I got some good advice and help from Macfixit on a couple of matters.
SoftRAID XT did work well with partitioning, etc but it would be good if SoftRAID had a wiki instead of spreading answers all over its web site.
Previous OWC enclosures have failed because of power supply and/or controller issues but they did work continuously over a number of years. So far so good with this enclosure and hope to get the same performance.”
